Naze Tower opens from 1st April for heritage, culture, food and spectacular views

The Naze Tower re-opens its doors for the 2017 season on Saturday 1st April and will be open every day 10am to 5pm until 31st October.

The 86ft historic landmark is dramatically situated on the cliffs at the Naze – its roof-viewing platform gives 360-degree panoramic views of coastal Essex and Suffolk. Inside, the tower houses a museum about the history of the Tower and the Naze, a tea rooms with seating inside and outside and an art gallery.

Throughout the 2017 season three art exhibitions are programmed. Work by 38 established and emerging artists from East Anglia in a wide range of media, from painting and photography to ceramics and glass will be on show.

Highlights of the Spring Exhibition…

Shown over six floors in the Naze Tower the Spring Exhibition shows off the creative talent that is abundant in our region.

Ted Toms, who finds inspiration for his oil paintings from the Stour Estuary and the North Sea coast will be having a solo show. Ted’s work has a painterly and atmospheric quality that draws you in. An alumni of Colchester Art School where he was taught by leading artists John Nash and Peter Blake, Ted is a member of the East Anglian Group of Marine Artists.

Sara E Napoletani, who also attended Colchester Art School, will be having a solo show. Sara paints using watercolour and egg tempera, a challenging medium but one that adds a vibrancy to her work. Her studies of birds are inspired by the freedom of flight and the pure beauty of these fabulous creatures. They are the epitome of spirits in the wind and she endeavours to recreate that in her paintings.

In our mixed show we have photo collage by Barbara Basso-Bert that celebrates the small details of our island and quirky exquisite animal drawings by Annette Standing. Crafts are also well represented. We have the delicately hand painted ceramics of renowned husband and wife team Leon and Jenny Pettersson. Who have been potters for over 30 years. Their decorative yet functional wares are inspired by their garden and surrounding countryside, including dragonflies, warblers, hares and stag’s. In contrast we also have on show ceramics by Nancy Dunham, which reflect the subtle and distinct nature of porcelain. Helen Wallace will be showing two jewellery collections created in silver clay. One is inspired by the natural world; leaves, seed heads and buds found in her garden, and the other by the fossilised 50 million year old sharks’ teeth found on the beach below the Naze Tower.

Each year we choose Tower Favourites who will show different work throughout the season. In 2017 back by demand Edmund Oxborrow’s unique driftwood scenes inhabited by sea birds and prints by celebrated Norfolk artist Samuel Thomas. Influenced by pop art, art deco & the psychedelic, escape into Samuel’s world where picture perfect moments in life exude with intense colour combinations & intricate patterns: “maybe the grass really is greener on the other side.”

The Spring Exhibition runs from the 1st April to the 18th June.
